The League was started in 1920 when women in the United States won the
right to vote. Today it has a membership of about 85,000 and is active at
a national, state, and local level. Membership is open to all women and
men who are citizens and at least 18 years old.
The League does not support any political party or any candidate and
has earned a national reputation for fairness in providing unbiased
election information.
Our Mission
The League of Women Voters has two separate and distinct roles. In our
Voter Service/Citizen Education role we present unbiased nonpartisan
information about elections, the voting process, and issues. In our
Action/Advocacy role we are also nonpartisan but we use our positions to
advocate for or against particular policies in public interest. We never
support or oppose any political party or candidate.
To conduct our voters service and citizen education activities, we do
so with funds from the League of Women Voters or California Education
Fund, which is a 501(c)(3) corporation, a nonprofit educational
organization. The League of Women Voters of California, a membership
organization, conducts actions and advocacy and is a nonprofit 501(c)(4)
corporation.

The League welcomes all people who have an interest in local, state, or
national issues. Joining at the local level makes you a member at all
levels: San Mateo County, Bay Area, California, and national. Each member
receives our local newsletter "The Voter" published about ten
times each year and newsletters from the California and National Leagues.
A member is welcome to participate in many study groups and voter
education projects. Send your check for $65 (yearly dues) with your name,
address, and daytime and evening telephone numbers to:
