Water: Goals for the Delta and the State

Following our May 2009 convention, the LWVC assembled a group of interested League members from throughout the state to share information about water issues. We agreed that our goals for solutions to the Delta and larger state water concerns were those ex-pressed in a letter we sent to Resources Agency Secretary Mike Chrisman in November 2008 regarding the Delta Vision and Bay Delta Conservation Plan. We noted that, as in No-vember 2008, there is a fear that "the water needs of those who live and work within the Delta will be of secondary importance to the perceived need for water supply reliability in other parts of the state."

The 2008 letter went on to say:

Additionally, we believe the state should set limits on the amount of water to be exported through or around the Delta.

Therefore, we urge that the scope of the [environmental review] include an alterna-tive that would establish statewide water conservation, recycling, watershed manage-ment, development of local supplies, and other non-structural strategies as the pre-ferred solution to meeting the goals of sus-tainability of the Delta ecosystem and reli-ability of water supply.
